Why You Might Love Vegetable Starts
âStartsâ or seedlings are baby plants that have been planted from seeds and grown out by someone else, like us. Also, theyâve often been acclimated to the outdoors (hardened-off) and are ready to finish out their lives in your garden.
Plant starts come in 4-packs or in 4âģ single plastic containers. Theyâre more expensive then starting your own when compared to the cost of seed packets, but they can be well worth it! Hereâs why:
- We have many varieties to choose from.
- Starting from seeds takes special equipment, like heat mats, trays, seed starting soils and lights. This can be a large investment.
- Maybe you want a leg up on the growing season. Maybe you didnât order your seeds fast enough or perhaps you just didnât get your seeds planted in time.Â
- You have precious little time to spare at the moment and you need to get that garden in!Â
- Germination, damping off disease, soil temps, light, over-watering, under-watering are all situations that stress gardeners out because they can easily set you back to square one. Skip that stuff.
- We only offer vegetable plants that grow and thrive in our area.Â
- Starting seeds can take up space inside or in a greenhouse. Assuming that your garden bed is ready â you purchase only the plants, period.
Shopping for Vegetable Starts
We provide starts both in the Spring and in The Fall. For the Spring starts, we will have 2 pickups at the shed. First pickup is for “cold hardy” starts like lettuce, cabbage, broccoli, etc. The second pickup is for warm weather starts like eggplants, peppers, tomatoes, basil, etc.Â
