Sorry, but we do not ship chicks. You must pick them up at our farm in Hood River, Oregon. Â
The chicks arrive small, only 2-3 days old. We like to keep them at least overnight so we can get them warm, hydrated and fed and to also make sure they are as healthy as possible before we turn them over to you. Â
We always have them vaccinated for Mereks at the hatchery and then we hydrate with a probiotic solution and provide a high quality certified organic starter feed from Day 1 with us.
There are 3 main reasons why we choose Early May:
First, when we owned our retail store in The Heights, we sold chicks as early as late February all the way into July. While we certainly sold quite a few chicks early, most of the sales were in late April-early May for whatever reason.Â
Second, when we did order early in the year, we found that it was best to use a regional hatchery because when itâs colder temperatures, the chicks travel a shorter distance and thereâs less chance of them DOA. Unfortunately, the regional hatchery has a limited selection of breeds. Now that we sell to a smaller group who still want a nice variety to choose from, we order from a hatchery that has a great selection but which is much further away. Ordering later makes a big difference in their arrival condition.Â
The last reason is that we like to order a wide variety of breeds which have to be all available on the same date. The hatchery tells us which date all will be available for shipping which is later in the season as they are very busy earlier on.Â
The chicks we get are ~3 day old pullets (unless you specify that you want a cockerel (male)). They are sexed at the hatchery and claim a 90% accuracy, so there is still a chance it will become a Rooster.
Yes, we do take requests and will try and get you want you want. However, there are minimum orders for specific breeds, so we may not be able to get them if we don't have enough requests for that breed. Contact us and we'll see what we can do.Â
We can only hold your chicks for 1 week.Â
